Detailed Descriptions of the Holistic Medicines
Detailed descriptions of the medicines given to my puppy (as seen in Haley’s Patient Log) including how it helps, how to give it, how much, and where to get it.
Parvaid
How does it help? Calms the stomach, soothes the digestive tract, strengthens the immune system, and brings back your puppy’s appetite. Parvo helps your puppy overcome the parvo virus. Usually Parvaid + Pedialyte + Vibactra are all your puppy needs to overcome parvo – you basically NEED Parvaid to cure your puppy.
How do I give it? Orally, or via enema if your puppy isn’t keeping anything down orally.
How much do I give? Instructions are on the container it comes in.
Where can I get it? Parvaid is not easy to find. You can order it online and choose next-day shipping (will make it very expensive) or open up your phone book and call EVERY possible place that might sell it. I got mine at a local natural/holistic pet supplies store – she didn’t have any on her but was able to get it for me the next day.
Vibactra
How does it help? A strong antibiotic that kill viruses, bacteria, and fungus across the board, plus single-celled organisms such as coccidia protozoan. Natural antibiotics are far more effective against a wider range of pathogens than what traditional antibiotics cover and in some cases, the natural antibiotic can make the difference of whether a puppy survives. Usually Parvaid + Pedialyte + Vibactra are all your puppy needs to overcome parvo – you basically NEED Vibactra to cure your puppy.
How do I give it? Orally every six hours. If you give it to your puppy by itself, without other medicines at the same time, the effect will be even stronger.
How much do I give? Instructions are on the container it comes in.
Where can I get it? Vibactra is also not easy to find. You can order it online and choose next-day shipping (will make it very expensive) or open up your phone book and call EVERY possible place that might sell it. I got mine at a local natural/holistic pet supplies store.
Charcoal
How does it help? If your puppy is whining and/or it was chemically wormed within the last 7 days, it probably has campylobacter poisoning. Charcoal cleans the body of toxins.
How do I give it? Give charcoal capsules (empty capsule and mix with water and syringe down the throat) every 2 hours for a total of 8 hours. Dose this on the opposite half hour away from the hourly tea and Parvaid dose, as these natural anti-poisoning products will sweep poisons and toxins out of the body, but they will also remove the good things. Should be given via enema every 8 hours as well.
How much do I give? See chart at the bottom.
Where can I get it? Health food stores. Bought mine at Whole Foods.
Pedialyte
How does it help? Pedialyte replaces the fluids and minerals (electrolytes) that are lost when your puppy has diarrhea or vomits.
How do I give it? Orally or via enema. Rotate hourly between giving aloe vera juice and Pedialyte.

Lemon Juice

Where can I get it? Walmart, health food stores. Preferably a buffered form, such as Ester C, calcium ascorbate, etc.
Colostrum
How does it help? An excellent source of protein. Also helps balance sugar levels.
How do I give it? If your puppy can’t keep down oral liquids, you can open up the capsules and put the powder on your puppy’s tongue.
How much do I give? Give a pinch to 1 tsp depending on your dog’s weight.
Where can I get it? Health food stores. Bought mine at Whole Foods. Make sure it is New Zealand Colostrum – will cost more, but it’s much better for your dog.
Milk thistle
How does it help? If your puppy has been chemically wormed or vaccinated, it may have a toxic liver. Milk thistle can help heal its liver.
How do I give it? Mix in enemas with fresh lemon juice, and give orally too if your puppy is keeping down fluids orally.
How much do I give? Instructions should be on the container it comes in. Or see the chart at the bottom.

How do I give it? Orally or via enema. Rotate hourly between giving aloe vera juice and Pedialyte.

MSM
How does it help? An excellent natural anti-inflammatory that will quickly reduce swelling. When dosing puppies with inflamed intestinal tracts, double the initial dose for the first two weeks (though you won’t need to give it for 2 weeks). Expect the puppy to appear more relaxed and comfortable within an hour of dosing.
How do I give it? Via enema ONLY.
How much do I give? See chart at bottom.
Where can I get it? You can purchase “Pure” 100% MSM powder or crystals at a health food store. You can also find it at Walmart, pharmacies, etc. Mine came in capsules.
Turmeric
How does it help? Excellent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-carcinogenic, cardio and gastrointestinal effects, and great for the liver.
How do I give it? Via enema ONLY.

Kefir, cottage cheese, yogurt
How does it help? Although I don’t believe yogurt is generally healthy for dogs, it seemed to be easy enough on my puppy’s stomach when she first started eating again. This is because of the healthy bacteria, or probiotics, in yogurt, kefir, etc.
How do I give it? Try giving it to your puppy to see if it eats it willingly.
How much do I give? Start off with a VERY small amount at a time, and probably mixed with water. By small I mean a tsp or something, depends on your dog’s size.
DE (Diatomaceous Earth)
How does it help? If your puppy has worms, IT WILL NOT HEAL UNLESS YOU GIVE IT DE or a special tea you can make if you absolutely cannot obtain DE. My puppy was holding on and on but just DIDN’T get better until she got DE. As soon as we started giving DE (actually we had to make the special de-worming tea until the DE came) she started getting better and eating. So don’t assume your puppy doesn’t have worms just because you don’t see little white wiggly things in their poop!
How do I give it? Orally, hourly, mixed with pedialyte or aloe vera juice. DE is safe to use via enema as well for puppies who are not having bowel movements. Just mix with their hourly pedialyte and Parvaid dose. If you see improvement in your puppy after giving it DE/de-worming tea after 24 hours, your puppy has worms and needs DE for the next 30 days.
How much do I give? It depends on your puppy’s weight. I gave my 20 lbs. puppy 2 teaspoons via enema with 1-1/2 tbsp of pedialyte fluid, and then 2 teaspoons orally 4x/day until she ate again, then just 1 tbsp. in her food daily for the next 30 days.
Where can I get it? I got mine off of Ebay. It is HARD IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE to find it at normal stores like Walmart of health food stores.
De-worming tea to give until your DE comes:
1 cup electrolyte fluid – bring to light boil on stove
Add 2 tablespoons of raw garlic
2 tablespoons of ground clove spice
DE is recommended over this because dogs hate the taste of garlic (making it hard to get them to take this tea) and DE kills more worms than the tea does.
